Just three months into 2020 and we have already been hit by a pandemic. COVID-19, also known as the novel coronavirus disease 2019, is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person, and is affecting communities throughout the world. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, almost every office has implemented work from home policy to control the spread of the virus.
But what happens next is up to you. You can indulge in a diet disaster, or you can make smart decisions. In fact, working and eating at home can be great for your waistline; without co-workers and peer pressure, you're in the driver’s seat.
Being quarantined at home is a golden chance to keep a track of your habits. While it gives you some extra time to dedicate to workouts, it also makes you crave all the tasty snacks you see all the time in your kitchen. This is the time you need to train your mind and not only eat but also exercise consciously. You must switch to a healthier lifestyle and try taking your usual busy life back on a healthy track.
Here are a few tips to stay healthy while being quarantined at home:
Pen down a schedule
Note down everything you will do during the day on pen and paper. Writing things down makes it easier for you to follow them. Planning a schedule also increases the motivation to stay healthy, which will help you in following the schedule punctually.
Set a workout routine
Staying at home also helps you take out time to stick to a workout routine. If you are trying to lose weight for a long time, then make the best use of this time. You need not go to gym or parks for this. All you need is a corner of your house where you have optimum space. It can either be your garden or your living room.
Pro tip: There are ample of workout routines that are available on the internet which you can choose according to your age and body type.
Eat a healthy breakfast
Breakfast is the most important part of the day. It is also said that you must have breakfast ‘like a king’. Your breakfast needs to be filled with nutrient rich food to keep you going through the day. Include variety in your breakfast and make combinations of different food items.
Pro tip: You can include fruits, oats, cornflakes, eggs, millets etc. to make your breakfast both, healthy and tasty.
Create a workstation
If you have been asked to ‘work from home’, then you must have to follow similar work timings as in the office. In order to complete work efficiently create a workstation for yourself.
Take short breaks
Our body requires rest for short periods to compensate for the energy lost. It needs to recharge and re-energize to keep you going for the rest of the day. Make sure you take 3-4 short breaks during your working hours to avoid any kind of exposure.
Have a wholesome lunch
Make yourself a wholesome lunch and try eating it along with your family. Your lunch must be filled with all kinds of nutrients, proteins and fats required for a healthy body.
Healthy Snacking
Snacking can add a huge amount of unwanted calories to your diet. During the gap between the meals, you are more likely to consume more calories to beat hunger pangs. Here are some healthy snacks you can add to your diet with a limited amount of calories to prevent weight gain - fruits, salted veggies, nuts, roasted chana, peanuts, trail mixture, granola bars, popcorn, home baked sweet potato chips, salads, oats cheela, coconut water etc.
Stay hydrated
Sometimes hunger is mistaken for thirst. I put a sticky note by my computer reminding me to drink water. Tea or coffee can also count toward your fluid intake – just make sure you aren’t adding lots of extra sugar.
Make indoor strolls a habit
Sitting at the same place for hours together makes your body stiff. It also leads to pain in the spine and joints. Get up from your desk once in a while and take small strolls inside your home itself. To a bit of bending and stretching to keep your joints oiled.
Have a timely dinner
For a healthy mind and body, it is recommended to have dinner before 8 pm. It should be the lightest meal of the day and must be eaten in small proportions. Try eating healthy and only eat to satisfy the hunger pangs and not fill yourself unnecessarily.
Try inculcating these healthy lifestyle tips in your daily routine and see your daily routine change for good.
Foot note: Don’t make working from home an excuse for poor eating habits. Instead, make it an opportunity to take extra good care of yourself!
